Buyers' Top 10 Tips

Read listings carefully and ask other members questions when you want to know more or need clarification about details of the item.

Check the member's rating. If other buyers have had consistently good experiences with a member, chances are you will too. Scammers or unethical members willl be banned from the community. The TM rating system is meant to keep the best of the best participating in the Treasure Matching process. A newer member may not have any or many ratings, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy, sell, or trade with them. Most online sellers are good folks. If you have any questions, send a message to the seller and see how responsive and helpful they are; if you have concerns, contact TM and we'll check into it.

When you’re trying to find a missing piece to a collectible, like a lid, or add to a collection, make sure the item you want to buy from another member is the right piece. Carefully check the item’s description size (all dimensions), color, manufacturer, series, etc. to make sure it’s a match. Communicate with the seller and ask any questions you need to in order to verify that the item is the piece you want and need.

Check the pictures carefully to make sure you’re getting what you think you are. If anything in the pictures raises a question about the item, send a message to the seller (see #4). If you cannot get a good enough look at the item, because the picture quality is too poor or not a good angle, send a message to the seller so he or she is aware of the issue and can post better pictures.

Do your research and make sure you feel good about the price you’re paying for an item or what you're trading for an item.

Browse the seller’s other listings; this is a community designed to help people find missing pieces to their collectibles. If you know what other members are looking for, you may see what they need on TM or while you're out treasure hunting.

When you do send a message to a member, be patient in getting a response. We recommend members check their accounts regularly and respond within 24 hours whenever possible. If you don’t get a response right away, try again in a day or two. If you still don’t get a response, please let us know so that we can contact the member. We want the TM community to be interactive, supportive, helpful and fun.

When you find a missing piece, or you help someone else find a missing piece on TM, please click the post to fb and/or twitter button. The likelihood of collectors finding a missing piece to a collectible, or finding more pieces to their collections, will get better and better as more people learn about Treasure Matching and the community grows.

  • If you're buying or trading for an item that's being shipped and want it to be insured, don't forget to ask the member to buy the insurance, and of course be willing to pay for it.
  • If you have any special packing requests or concerns, communicate them to the member and be prepared to pay for any additional costs.
  • Be prepared for the item’s arrival. If you’re going to be out of town, alert a friend or neighbor to bring the package in from the elements. Make sure your delivered item can be protected from inclement weather, either in a covered area, or provide a storage bin or box where the delivery person can place your package. Put a sign on top: ‘Place Postal Packages in Here… Pretty Please!’

We need your help to make sure that TM members are contributing in a positive way to the community. Help other members make the most educated decisions about the safety of buying, selling, or trading with other members by leaving a review after your transaction is complete. Were you satisfied? Leave the seller a great review! Had a few issues? Don’t jump the gun and leave a bad review if a message to the seller might alert them to an issue they weren’t aware of. Do alert other members, and the TM team when you have concerns about a member TM is striving to make the community the safest and most enjoyable place possible.

#1 Have Fun! As you’re searching the site for things you're looking for, take not of what others are looking for so that you can keep your eye out on TM and when you're out treasure hunting. If you see a possible match for an item you’ve listed and want to sell or trade, hit the match button. If you see a possible match for other member’s items, send a message to those who’ve listed the items. When you’re out and about at thrift stores and yard sales, tell other people about Treasure Matching, so that more missing pieces will be listed on the site and more matches will be made. And look for items that are incomplete so you can bring them to the community to help find their missing pieces.

Let’s rescue as many treasures from history that we can!!
